KINDERGARTEN!

Today was the official start of kindergarten. All four of us gobbled down lunch and drove up the hilly crest to the school. Oldest clung to me at first when we arrived. We had forgotten his backpack, and he was worrired about that. So I jetted home while K stayed with the boys. By the time I got back, the classroom door was closed, and everyone was enjoying the goodies a local bakery donated. So, we had to rap on the door and thrust the forgotten backpack through the crack in the door. Way off in the distance, in circle time, Oldest looked relieved.

We didn't see too many tears; 2 sets of parents and 2 children. The class has swelled to almost full (21 students). We know 2 of the children, so that is great. I know Oldest is going to love being in kindergarten. Going to all-day summer camp has him used to crowds, lines and following orders. Useful skills for a student. I hope he eventually veers from the lemming path...

I am thrilled for him. I hope this is the beginning of a love of school, and a life-long lust for learning.

When the first day of school for my Oldest ended and he arrived back home I said Did you miss me? He said Noo, we did this and this and this and this. I was relieved and a bit sad at the same time

Oh wow, the first step on an exciting journey for your family! Congratulations!

I just read your comment over at blackbird re different meals and wanted to reassure you that it probably won't be for as long as you fear. I spent years cooking two meals a night (one for adults, one for toddlers) and I had completely forgotten about it before reading your comment, it feels so long ago now.

There was a transition period of a year or so where I could cook one meal, but make it mild (say if it was a curry, stir fry or other spicy dish) and spice the grownups' dishes separately at table, but now we all eat the same stuff (and #3 is still only aged 7). If they don't like it they can go and have a piece of fruit and bowl of yoghurt, but the rule is they have to try the meal at least. The promise of dessert is always a good motivation to eat those vegies too ("if you try one piece of pumpkin you may have pudding").

Glad things went well for you and your boy. It seems like years since the Girls started school but it was only February this year!

Just had a chance to catch up on your blog. Your Thursday post was upsetting; many people find comfort in "sameness" and can't or won't think outside this. Like you said, love is the most important thing. As an aside, I recently finished reading "Digging to America" by Anne Tyler. It's subject matter may be of interest to you. I enjoyed reading it.

Wow. Primo's first day of kindergarten is Sept 7 and I am getting nervous. He seems excited,a little nervous, but not much. Plus he has his coveted Lightning McQueen backpack : )

I am so excited for him.

Glad yours went well!
